Avenue A's grimiest coffeehouse will soon reopen as "Hopscotch, a café tailored to the needs of children and families," according to a press release

Screw kids and their families...aren't there enough places in the city that are tailored to children and families? I thought the whole purpose of having children is to leave them at home in the first place.

Any Idea of when this is supposed to happen? I was just there last week and it was still alt.coffee. (maybe they changed thier minds). As for the place stinking of BO and Cigs, so what? So does my job! The wifi has always been free, I don't know when (or if) they started charging for it. I know the use of the computers in the back is not free (well depends on who you know)
Dont tell me we have to get yet another petition going now to save Alt.Coffee!

I think we should protest it!
Dude, I spaced on the fact that 2600 put this forum up to save the hotel, until just now. For the last two months I had completely forgotten about Vornado etc.

I think it's finally time to form a membership-based hacker social organization, and have our own lounge.
I think thats a great Idea. All we have to do is find a place of our own, and buy it!

Openfly and I were talking about that in a bar on the LES last night, got some good ideas for how to pull it off. Need to brainstorm more though.

Are you thinking of something like the old Notwork, only without the giving-it-away-to-Indymedia bit?

Notwork was the old network that 2600 was on before they went to NAC. I belive they were around when it was h2k or h2k2 (when the hackers when to K2 to hold thier summit). I recall there was a huge issue one day on the mailing list about somone releasing internal notwork information about the group. It was blamed (incorrectly I am sure) on Emmanuel by somone on the list close to the source.

No clue. I disavow all knowledge of indi media and notwork

Notwork was basically a loft on 29th st that served as a hacker crash space and hangout, full of couches, computers, and a T1. It was active in the late 1990s, but at some point (~2000?) the space was given to NYC Indymedia, who I think now use it as their main office.
